Background story: |
Magnus Maximus was a distinguished general who had served under Theodosius the Elder. He was proclaimed emperor by his troops in 383. He defeated and killed the Western Emperor Gratian in Gaul. He was not able to overthrow Gratian’s son Valentinian II though, because of the intervention of the emperor of the east Theodosius. Maximus made his capital at Augusta Treverorum (Trier) in Gaul and ruled Britain, Gaul, Spain, and Africa. He became an efficient and popular ruler. In 387 he managed to force Valentinian II out of Rome. Valentinian fled to Thessaloniki, under the protection of the Emmperor of the East. Theodosius I had no choice but to turn decisively against Magnus Maximus and launched a campaign against him in 388. |
The Battle: |
Magnus Maximus The army of Maximus was larger, with many German mercenaries. But Theodosius' army was more experienced and applying more effective tactics managed to win after a fierce two-day battle. After the defeat, Maximus took refuge in Aquileia (in northeastern Italy) where he was besieged by Theodosius. The city was soon surrendered and Maximus was executed along with his son. |
Aftermath: |
The battle ended the reign of Magnus Maximus who, in essence, was the last Roman ruler north of Lyon. After him, Rome never regained actual control of Britain and Gaul. |
