Background story: |
Following the Byzantine restoration in Constantinople, Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos was determined to beat Michael II Doukas, the Despotes of Epirus, who had been part of the alliance against him at Pelagonia (1259). He sent an army against him under Alexios Strategopoulos but Alexios was repulsed by the son of Michael II, Nikephoros Komnenos Doukas. Alexios was taken prisoner. |

Michael II of Epirus agreed to become a vassal of the Byzantine emperor. As part of the peace agreement, Nikephoros was married to Anna Kantakouzene, a niece of Michael VIII. The peace did not last long. |
