Background story: |
After the disastrous defeat in the battle of Anchialus on 20th August 917, the Bulgarian army marched against the Byzantine capital. While the victorious Bulgarian army was marching southwards, the Byzantine commander Leo Phokas, who survived at Anchialus, reached Constantinople by sea and gathered the last Byzantine troops to intercept his enemy before reaching the capital. |
