Background story: |
Despite his failure at Amorion, which the Byzantines recaptured in 669, the Caliph Muawiya, who from the beginning had given great importance to naval power, was able to establish a permanent presence of the Arabian fleet in the Sea of Marmara. By 672 the Saracens had achieved the partial blockade of Constantinople. The situation was getting more difficult every year. In 677 the Arabs made many raids along the coast of the Sea of Marmara. |
The Battle: |
Greek fire in action in the Skylitzes manuscript As the Arabs retreated, they were caught in a storm that sank nearly all of their ships. Meanwhile, the Byzantine army pursued the Arabs back to Syria and defeated them there. |
Aftermath: |
The Byzantine victories of this period ended the immediate Arab threat. A peace treaty was signed that lasted for almost 30 years. |
