Background story: |
The Persian king Kavadh I needed money to pay his debts to the Hephthalites who had helped him regain his throne. Moreover, recent changes in the flow of the Tigris brought famine and floods. When Emperor Anastasios I refused to provide any help, Kavadh tried to find money by force. So, the war between Byzantines and Persians was resumed in 502. |

Aftermath: |
The sack of Amida was a serious blow at a time when Byzantium was not accustomed to the destruction of cities on the eastern frontier. Emperor Anastasios reacted to the news by sending a large force of 60,000 men, but the Byzantines could not retake the city until the final peace in 505 AD, when they paid a tribute of 1,100 pounds of gold. |
