Background story: |
Less than a decade after the 50-year peace treaty of 562, tensions between Byzantium and Persia amounted at all points of intersection between the two empires’ spheres of influence. The war was triggered by pro-Byzantine revolts in areas of the Caucasus under Persian hegemony and also by the denial of the Byzantines to pay the annual tribute. |

Ruins of the Byzantine city of Daras |
Noteworthy: |
The Persians used in Daras the captured Roman ballistae from the abandoned Roman Siege of Nisibis, previously in 573. |
Aftermath: |
The fall of Daras was the event that caused the madness of emperor Justin II. The city was returned to the Byzantines after the peace treaty of 590. |
