Background story: |
In 755, the long peace between Bulgaria and the Byzantine Empire came to an end. Between 755 and 775, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine V organized nine (!) campaigns to deal with the Bulgarian threat. In 756 he defeated the Bulgarians in the first battle of Marcellae. Three years later he came back and reached to the natural fortress of the Balkan mountains. |

Emperor Constantine V It was a disaster, but the Bulgarian Khan Vinekh did not take exploit the opportunity. He did not chase the enemy and he started negotiations for peace, instead. |
Aftermath: |
It was the worst defeat of the Byzantines by the Bulgarians until then, but it did not have serious consequences . Vinekh's decision not to take full advantage of the victory, displeased the country's nobles, so they revolted against the khan and assassinated him in 761. Clashes with the Bulgarians continued unabated and escalated over the years. |
